The Evolution Divorce Difference

Guiding You Through Today, Preparing You for Tomorrow

From clarity in the chaos to hope for what’s next, we’re with you every step of the way.

Clarity When You Need It Most

Divorce involves decisions that affect your finances, your children, and your future — often all at once. We cut through the legal complexity so you understand what's happening at every stage, what your options are, and what each choice actually means for you. No jargon. No runaround.

Support Through the Difficult Moments

Even the most straightforward divorce involves moments that are emotionally difficult. We're here for those moments — not just the legal ones. When things feel overwhelming, our team helps you stay grounded and focused on what matters.

A Foundation for What Comes Next

Our attention to the details of your case — especially the separation agreement — is what protects you after the divorce is finalized. Vague agreements create future disputes. We make sure yours doesn't.

Q&A

Common Questions from Henrico County Residents

We both work and have significant assets. How is property divided in Virginia?

Virginia is an equitable distribution state, which means marital property is divided fairly — not automatically 50/50. Marital property includes both spouses' income, retirement contributions, home equity, and investments accumulated during the marriage, regardless of whose name is on the account or title. For dual-income Henrico couples, this often involves negotiating two retirement accounts, stock options, and a jointly owned home. Accurate valuation and experienced negotiation matter a great deal here.

How does custody work when both parents have demanding careers?

Virginia courts determine custody based on the best interests of the child, which includes each parent's work schedule, proximity to the child's school, and realistic ability to be present day-to-day. For Henrico professionals with demanding jobs, this often means negotiating a custody arrangement that reflects real life — not just an idealized schedule that creates conflict down the road.

My divorce is uncontested. Do I still need an attorney?

Even in an uncontested divorce, the separation agreement you sign is a legally binding document that governs your finances and your children's lives for years to come. A poorly drafted agreement — or one that doesn't account for future circumstances — can create costly problems later. Having an experienced attorney draft and review that agreement is one of the most important investments you can make in the process.

How long does a divorce take in Henrico County?

It depends on whether your divorce is contested or uncontested, and whether minor children are involved. An uncontested divorce with no children and a signed separation agreement can often be resolved in a matter of months. A contested divorce, or one involving custody disputes, typically takes longer. Our approach is to move your case forward as efficiently as possible — because a prolonged process doesn't serve you or your family.

Chris Macturk founded Evolution Divorce in 2017 after more than two decades practicing family law in the Richmond area. His goal was simple: help people navigate divorce with the kind of honest, expert guidance that the traditional legal industry too often fails to provide.

Chris's connection to Henrico County runs deep. He served as President of the Henrico County Bar Association and as Past Chair of the Domestic Relations Section of the Virginia Bar Association. When you work with Evolution Divorce, you work with Chris's team, not a rotating cast of associates.
